My Responsibilities as a Competitive Fencer

Being a competitive fencer means taking responsibility for your preparation, registration, equipment, and participation. Use this checklist before every competition.

Before the Competition

  • Register on time for all events you plan to attend.

  • Monitor tournaments, deadlines, and event updates regularly.

  • Check qualification requirements and pathways for major events.

  • Make sure all your equipment is in good working condition before every competition.

  • Know the competition rules and make sure you understand the requirements for your events.

  • Request coaching in advance if you need coaching at the competition.

  • Coordinate your warm-up with your teammates when appropriate.

  • Bring your club jacket or club T-shirt for warm-ups and the podium ceremony.

Competition-Day Responsibilities

  • Arrive on time and be ready to warm up at least 60 minutes before your event begins.

  • Check your equipment before reporting to the strip.

  • Make sure you have everything you need before leaving for the venue.

  • Stay aware of announcements, event changes, check-in requirements, and strip assignments.

  • Represent yourself, your teammates, and your club with respect and good sportsmanship.

Local Events

Regional & National Events

Use the USA Fencing Tournament Browser to find regional and national competitions. USA Fencing's official registration instructions explain how to find events, check deadlines, review eligibility, and register.

What Do I Need to Compete?

Before every tournament, make sure you have:

  • Full fencing equipment

  • At least 2 foils

  • 2 body cords

  • 2 mask cords

  • A current USA Fencing membership appropriate for your event

For regional and national competitions, USA Fencing currently lists Competitive, International Competitive, Collegiate, Life, Life Installment, and Coach memberships as valid membership types. Local tournaments have different membership requirements. 

Important
Don't wait until the last minute. Check your equipment, membership, event eligibility, qualification status, registration deadlines, and tournament schedule well in advance.
